Ex-officio: Judi Dallinger, Russ Morgan, Candace McLaughlin. Guests present: Sam Thompson and Rambir Kang (Geography). Chairperson Cynthia Struthers called the meeting to order at 3:30 p.m. in 207A Morgan Hall. Jess White moved to approve the February 17 Minutes; Pat McGinty seconded the motion, which was unanimously approved. Chairperson Struthers announced that the Senate Executive Committee had reviewed the proposed changes to the Faculty Senate Bylaws for CGE. She will attend the Faculty Senate meeting on March 8 for the First Reading of the proposed Bylaws changes and will also attend the Senate meeting on March 29 for the Second Reading and vote. Geography 108 Dr. Sam Thompson, Chair of the Geography Department, presented a proposal for Natural Science (Part B) General Education credit for Geography 108 (Digital Earth). Dr. Thompson confirmed that it was a 4-credit class, as noted on the form, not a 3-credit class, as noted on the syllabus submitted with the form. Council members raised questions about several parts of the form: Section (c): This section needs to explicitly address all four of the learning objectives on page 59 of the catalog. Dr. Kang, who teaches the course, provided the Council with examples relevant to each of the four, but that was not reflected on the form. Section (d): Since this course will eventually be included in the Geography major, this section needs to be completed. Section (e): The form needs to be clearer about the ways in which writing and revision will be incorporated into this class. 鶹 expects that in courses with an enrollment of 50 or fewer, students should have at least one written assignment with written or oral feedback from the instructor with an opportunity for revision. ( HYPERLINK "http://www.wiu.edu/gened/WritingInGenEd.php" http://www.wiu.edu/gened/WritingInGenEd.php) Section (f): This section needs to be completed. The Council asked Drs. Thomas and Kang to bring a revised proposal back to a future CGE meeting for reconsideration. BOT/ZOO 200 Follow-Up Dr. Struthers reported no resolution on this issue yet. Biology Chair Mike Romano confirmed that Biology intends BOT 200 and ZOO 200 to remain Gen Ed courses open to all students. Dr. Romano will speak with Biologys Curriculum Committee and get back to Dr. Struthers at some future date. Art History 284 Gen Ed Assessment Plan The Council considered Art History 284s Gen Ed Assessment Plan for Goals 3 and 5. Goal 3: No learning outcome was listed; instead, the goals were listed as learning outcomes. The methods used to assess student learning were not clear, and seemed to perhaps be based on assignment grade, which is not appropriate. The four categories of assessment need to be correctly identified. Goal 5: Goal 5s reference to using exams and essays was not specific enough. Number 5 needs the specificity present in Goal 3. The forms will be returned to the Art Department for further attention. History 311 Gen Ed Assessment Plan John Miller moved to approve; Jess White seconded; approved unanimously as submitted. Report on Fall 2010 Gen Ed Assessment Data Associate Provost Judi Dallinger reported that Agriculture and DFMH have both submitted their results. Dr. Dallinger reported that BAT 300 had not yet submitted an assessment plan, although she has asked for it on several occasions. Womens Studies plans to have the revised plan for WS 265 available for the Council to review soon. The Council had an extended discussion of the Gen Ed Assessment results for English 180, because Dr. Dallinger reported that the Department reported identical results for both Goals 2 and 3. English reported that they had assessed the same four traits for both goals: 1.Essay articulates a clear and sophisticated thesis. 2. Essay details develop the thesis. 3. Essay effectively organizes ideas. 4. Essay uses the conventions of edited American English. Some Council members argued that since critical thinking is central to writing and communicating, that it was appropriate to combine the two. Others argued that since the goals were listed separately in our Gen Ed program and are assessed separately in all other departments assigned those goals, they should be assessed separately in this case. The suggestion was made that traits 1, 2, and 3 be used to assess Goal 2 (critical thinking) and trait 4 be used to assess Goal 3 (clear and cogent communication). The Council decided to return the report to English and ask them to decide how they want to handle this, with the proviso that the same data cannot be used to assess both goals. Gen Ed Study Abroad and Transfer Courses The Council discussed a concern raised by Council member Ginny Boynton, also a department chair. She reported that department chairs are sometimes asked by the Study Abroad office to decide which courses at foreign universities should earn Gen Ed credit at 鶹, a role that belongs to CGE. This broadened into a discussion of the best way to handle the myriad transfer courses seeking Gen Ed credit that Chairperson Struthers must now evaluate. The Council will return to these issues at a future date. The meeting adjourned at 4:50 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Dr. Ginny Boynton, CGE Secretary !),->?@HQer ( * 5 7 R f g h i x ŵűűŊɱ~h>ihYrhA h3h3 h35h|ih|i6hh4 hz; hz;hS hS hm9h4Zh|ih5Y&h3hzhkhz5htht{ hS 5aJ h35aJhAhb5aJhAht{5aJ0!>?@h i | } T U YZd-DM [$gdP gdP gd5Y&gdt{$a$gdt{ ! $ % / 7 8 9 E M c d p u x y { | U c VXYZsOPd丯phP B*PJaJmH phsH !hP hP B*aJmH phsH hP hxaJ h7aJhP hP aJ hxaJhP h7aJhP h"aJ h"5>*hhuRhAhz;ht,Ehxh4Zh"ht{hzh^h4 h>ihv)d(SUV,B\$OetKLSZǶܠܐܐܐ}ja[U[O[O hxaJ h"aJ hlaJhP hP aJ%hl5>*B*PJaJmH phsH %hP 5>*B*PJaJmH phsH hxB*PJaJmH phsH +hP hP 5>*B*PJaJmH phsH h@a|hP 0JPJaJmH sH (jhP B*PJUaJmH phsH hP B*PJaJmH phsH %hP hP B*PJaJmH phsH +,Be VWgdgdP d-DM [$gdP ZW Phxy~Tg|}~Kwy¾ʷ³سjhAA}UhR@h[w"ht,Eh"hQK hQK5>*h;Xh;X5>*h}Hh;X hshsh+F}hshhxhlhl5>*hlhP ht,EaJhlhl5>*aJhl5>*aJ hlaJ3ST}~xygd-gdt{gdgd;X^gdshR@h.Rh-jhAA}UhAA} gdt{21h:p/ =!"#$% b 666666666vvvvvvvvv666666>6666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666hH6666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666662 0@P`p2( 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p8XV~PJ_HmH nH sH tH @`@ bNormalCJ_HaJmH sH tH DA`D Default Paragraph FontRiR 0 Table Normal4 l4a (k ( 0No List 6U@6 F0 Hyperlink >*B*ph44 -0Header H$66 -0 Header CharCJaJ4 @"4 -0Footer H$616 -0 Footer CharCJaJ8A8 uRobject27>*S*Y(phHRH zE0 Balloon TextCJOJQJ^JaJN/aN zE0Balloon Text CharCJOJQJ^JaJPK![Content_Types].xmlj0Eжr(΢Iw},-j4 wP-t#bΙ{UTU^hd}㨫)*1P' ^W0)T9<l#$yi};~@(Hu* Dנz/0ǰ $ X3aZ,D0j~3߶b~i>3\`?/[G\!-Rk.sԻ..a濭?PK!֧6 _rels/.relsj0 }Q%v/C/}(h"O = C?hv=Ʌ%[xp{۵_Pѣ<1H0ORBdJE4b$q_6LR7`0̞O,En7Lib/SeеPK!kytheme/theme/themeManager.xml M @}w7c(EbˮCAǠҟ7՛K Y, e.|,H,lxɴIsQ}#Ր ֵ+!,^$j=GW)E+& 8PK!Ptheme/theme/theme1.xmlYOo6w toc'vuر-MniP@I}úama[إ4:lЯGRX^6؊>$ !)O^rC$y@/yH*񄴽)޵߻UDb`}"qۋJחX^)I`nEp)liV[]1M<OP6r=zgbIguSebORD۫qu gZo~ٺlAplxpT0+[}`jzAV2Fi@qv֬5\|ʜ̭NleXdsjcs7f W+Ն7`g ȘJj|h(KD- dXiJ؇(x$( :;˹!
